On assignment in Namibia

Position 23°33.704 S, 15°02.466 E l Namib desert. Close to the Gobabeb training and research centre, at 23°33.704 S, 15°02.466 E The Namib Dune Sea is formed by the powerful force of desert winds. These winds gradually push the dunes in a north-westerly direction. (Solvin Zankl)

November and December Solvin is working on assignment in the Namib.

GEO magazine, German issue No. 08/2012, publishes Solvin’s images about carbonate sand from Raja Ampat, Indonesia - (‘Reines Bio-Korn’)

GEO veröffentlicht in der Ausgabe 09/2011 Solvins Bilder über eine Handvoll Sand: Die Typen vom Strand  – (‘Reines Bio-Korn’)

[Digital focus stacking] Spicules that once have had stabilising and predator deterring functions in sponges can frequently be found in the sand from Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Diagonal of frame approx. Raja Ampat, Indonesien Bilddiagonale ca. 4 mm (Solvin Zankl) [Digital focus stacking] Within the diverse shapes of calcaeous particles there are spicules which served as structural elements and to a certain degree as a deterrent of predators in soft corals. After the die-off of the soft coral the spicules become a fraction of the sediment and therefore also of the sandy beaches. Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Diagonal of frame approx. Raja Ampat, Indonesien. Bilddiagonale ca. 5 mm (Solvin Zankl) [Digital focus stacking] The white carbonate sand from Raja Ampat, Indonesia, is generated by a vast diversity of organisms: e.g. foraminifera, sponges, brachiopods, echinoderms, bryozoa and mollusks. Diagonal of frame approx. (Solvin Zankl)
[Digital focus stacking] By picking out the spines of sea urchins from the sand sample from Raja Ampat, Indonesia, the wide range of colours of these animals become visible. Diagonal of frame approx. Bilddiagonale ca. 5 mm (Solvin Zankl) [Digital focus stacking] Threads of protoplasma by foraminifera (Sagenina frondescens) on a piece of sea shell with agglutinated sand particles. Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Diagonal of frame approx. Raja Ampat, Indonesien Bilddiagonale ca. 5 mm (Solvin Zankl) [Digital focus stacking] Two beauties of different kinds: the shells of the minute sea snail (Schwartziella ephamilla, top) and the wentletraps (Cycloscala hyalina, below) barely remained unbroken between the rough company of sand grains. Raja Ampat, Indonesien. Diagonal of frame approx. Raja Ampat, Indonesien Bilddiagonale ca. 2 mm (Solvin Zankl)
